Check out more pictures on our Facebook page.
We started out this morning with check in at the Boys & Girls Club and our opening session. After feasting on Concannon’s pastries and coffee from The Caffeinery, teen campers introduced their parents and shared what they hoped to get out of the camp.
Shortly after we sent parents home and got to work. Campers were divided up into groups and spent some time meeting their classmates. Then we loaded the vans and headed to Ball State University. After a brief orientation, campers checked into Kinghorn Hall and headed off to lunch in the Atrium in the Art & Journalism Building.
Board member, Juli Metzger, hosted us in the Unified Media Lab. Our 1st session, facilitated by BJ McKay and Micah Maxwell, focused on values and personal mission. Campers had an opportunity to identify their favorite leaders and list the characteristics that were most important to them. The list included famous leaders such as Presidents JFK, Lincoln and Obama, Rev Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesus, Kobe Bryant and local leaders like Derek King, Heidi White, Mr. Tony and Mr. Micah.
Campers also had an opportunity to write their own personal mission statements. They first looked at mission statements of local organizations like the YMCA, Muncie Schools and Boys & Girls Club.
After a quick break for dinner, they were right back at it with a session focused on their own community that was facilitated by Dr. Terry Whitt Bailey with the City of Muncie. After a fun activity of two truths and a lie, campers learned about the vision each other had for their community in the future. The next activity focused on mapping their community. Students learned about their community from each other’s perspectives.
The day ended with the “talking stick” exercise. During this activity the talking stick is passed around the circle and each participant gets an opportunity to share what is on their mind in a safe and confidential setting.
We’re all looking forward to another full day tomorrow![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]
